If red gem you mentioned is Crimson Stone, then you should head north from Crimson Crest, and you would meet the balloon station. leave it and keep going to the end of T-shaped road. The entrance of the mountain is in the end of T-shaped road. (44a3)
After you are on the top of mountain, you could find the frame, which you should put the gem on, in front of the house. Then the door would be open.
